Restaurants and cafés
Caesar Horní náměstí Popular pizzeria in the radnice, with prime-position seating on the main square. The dreary interior is not as atmospheric as it could be. Opening time: Daily 9am–1am

Café 87 1 máje 29. Bright, funky café next door to the Muzeum umění, serving egg-and-bacon breakfasts, toasted sandwiches, croissants, cakes and shakes. Opening time: Daily 8am–9pm
Green Bar Ztracena 1 Canteen-style self-service displaying a tempting range of soups, salads and vegetarian mains. Tasty, inexpensive and central, this is the busiest place in the city at around noon. Opening time: Mon– Fri 10am–5pm, Sat 9am–2pm
Hanácká hospoda Dolní nám. 38 A large, crowded restaurant in the Haunschildův palác, with a wide choice of Czech dishes and moderate prices. Opening time: Mon– Sat 10am– midnight, Sun 10am–8pm
Moravská restaurace Horní nám. 23 Slap bang next to the theatre on the main square, with traditional Moravian menu and wait-staff in folksy costume; this is where the coach parties invariably end up. Good list of Moravian wines. Opening time: Daily 11.30am–11pm
Opera Horní náměstí Main-square café with plentiful cakes and ice cream, a roomy interior with a children's play area, and an outdoor terrace looking out towards the plague column and fountain. Opening time: Mon– Sat 9am–11pm, Sun 9am–9pm
Piccolo 8 května Buzzing little place on the ground floor of the Prior department store, deservedly popular with local caffeine addicts. Your best bet for an early coffee and croissant. Opening time: Mon– Fri 8am–5pm, Sat 8am– noon.
Shanghai Horní nám. 8 Spacious Chinese restaurant, on an upper floor opposite the radnice, with large windows offering an unbeatable view over the square. Great-value lunchtime specials. Opening time: Daily 11am–11pm
Svatovaclavský pivovar Riegerova Restaurant-brewery serving up delicious own-brand beer and a solid menu of goulash-and-dumplings main courses. Opening time: Mon– Sat 11am– midnight, Sun 11am–10pm
Taverna Pavelčaková Good pizza and pasta in a homely checked-tablecloth dining room. Cute garden patio at the back. Opening time: Sun– Thurs 10.30am–11pm, Fri & Sat till midnight
U kohouta Lafayettová 3 Arguably the best restaurant in Olomouc, with the most eccentric opening hours, frequently closing at weekends and taking an entire month off in summer. Their reputation is based on great steaks and fine fish, although the own-recipe goulash is also good. Opening time: Mon– Fri 10am–9pm, Sat open if the owner feels like it
