Central Bohemia
Kutná Hora
For 250 years or so, KUTNÁ HORA (Kuttenberg) was one of the most important towns in Bohemia, second only to Prague, thanks to the silver deposits in the area. Today, Kutná Hora is a provincial town with a population of just over 20,000, but its monuments, the superb Gothic cathedral, and the remarkable monastery and ossuary in the suburb of Sedlec, make it one of the most enjoyable of all possible day-trips from Prague. In addition to the new influx of tourists, Kutná Hora has also benefited from a large injection of cash from the American tobacco giant Phillip Morris, whose factory is the town's chief employer.
