Bistro Acuña 4 C 3–17, Zona 2 An exceptional restaurant in a beautiful colonial garden setting with elegant service, white tablecloths and uplifting classical music. Set breakfast meals (US$4–6) all include tea/coffee and juice, and the bread is home-made. Lunch and dinner (US$10–18) are from an imaginative menu, taking in pasta, grilled meat dishes, seafood and outstanding cakes and desserts. There's a long wine list.
2 Bok'atas 4 C 3–34, Zona 2 Opening time: Closed weekday lunch and SunLarge, lively and sociable bar-restaurant renowned for its Mediterranean food, including decent paella. Also serves up good margaritas and wine.
3 Café and Restaurant La Posada 1 C 4–12, Zona 2, inside Hotel La Posada Stylish formal dining, serving Guatemalan specialities and international cuisine. There's a long menu and always a daily special, and if the weather permits, you can eat on a veranda facing the hotel's garden. The more relaxed and inexpensive café serves snacks and bagels.
4 Cafetería Santa Rita 2 C, on the plaza, close to the cathedral An excellent comedor ideal for filling comida típica, including huge breakfasts, and has friendly service.
5 Kam Mun 1 C 8–12, Zona 2. Large Chinese restaurant with big portions and a solid line-up of economical choices.
6 Xkape Koba'n Diagonal 4 5–13, Zona 2 A wonderful, stylish café-restaurant in a gorgeous old house where the walls are decorated with huipiles and local art. There's a very inventive menu with snacks like tamales (US$2) and many local recipes including the famous local kak-ik turkey soup (US$7.50), and kakaw-ik (a chocolate milk drink flavoured with vanilla, chilli and honey). Service can be slow though.
