Eastern Pacific Coast

    The eastern section of the Pacific coast is dominated by Escuintla, the region's largest town, and Puerto San José, formerly its most important port – though neither place is at all attractive. Further to the east is Monterrico, an impressive beach where you'll find the coast's most important wildlife reserve, a protected area of mangrove swamps that's home to some superb birdlife. Beyond that the coastal highway runs to the border with El Salvador, with branch roads heading off to a couple of small seashore villages.
