Petén
Biotopo Cerro Cahuí
On the north shore of the lake, 3km west of the centre of El Remate, the Biotopo Cerro Cahuí (daily 7am–5pm; US$4) is a wildlife conservation area comprising lakeshore, ponds and some of the best examples of undisturbed tropical forest in Petén. The smallest and most accessible of Petén's biotopos, it contains a rich diversity of plants and animals, and is especially recommended for birdwatchers. There are two hiking trails, a couple of small ruins and two thatched miradores on the hill above the lake; pick up maps and information at the gate where you sign in.
