Parque Natural Canopy Calderas

Nestling in the northern slopes of Pacaya is the Parque Natural Canopy Calderas (daily 8am–6pm; 5538 5531, www.parquenaturalcalderas.com ), a protected zone that encompasses a delightful highland lake and a dense patch of rainforest, close to the aldea of San José Calderas. The parque is a privately owned nature reserve where you can camp (US$7 per head) beside the clean lake, go horseriding (US$8 per hr) or swing through the jungle from professionally built wooden platforms along a 700m network of cable (US$20) which slices through the forest. If you go privately, stop in the nearby village of San José and ask the mayor for the canopy tour, and well-trained guides will accompany you and show you how to use the cable canopy ropes correctly.
