Around Antigua

San Antonio Aguas Calientes

SAN ANTONIO AGUAS CALIENTESis an indigenous village set on one side of a steep-sided bowl beneath the peak of Acatenango. San Antonio is famous for weaving, characterized by its complex floral and geometric patterns, and there's an indoor textile market next to the plaza where you can find a complete range of the local output. This is also a good place to learn the traditional craft of back-strap weaving; if you're interested, the best way to find out about possible lessons is simply by asking the women in the market. There's a steady stream of buses leaving the Antigua terminal for Ciudad Vieja and San Antonio; the last ones return around 7pm.
