Antigua

Drinking and nightlife

Author Pick Café No Sé 1 Av Norte 11C For conversation and atmosphere this scruffy-looking bar, well west of the centre, is the best bet in Antigua as there are always local and visiting characters around. There's a tiny front bar, a hidden tequila/mescal bar (stocked with over a dozen artisan liquors including the house Ilegal brand) and a dining area for inexpensive, filling grub. Live music most nights at 9pm, though at times the artists churn out too many sentimental cover songs.

Café Sky 1 Av Sur Offers terrific views from the upper deck of a three-storey building (there's a restaurant below). With a full cocktail list, this is the perfect place for sunset.

La Casbah Price: Tues– Thurs US$3, Fri & Sat around US$65 Av Norte 30 www.lacasbahantigua.com Nightclub that attracts a well-heeled crowd, with a spectacular venue overlooking the floodlit ruins of a Baroque church. Latin dance and house music rule the dancefloor at weekends, but electronic DJs mix up underground sounds on Thurs, and Wed is salsa night. There's a roof terrace; drinks are expensive.

Mono Loco 2 Av Norte 6B Huge, clichéd gringo sports bar-style place, with mediocre mainstream music and dreary food. For some reason, however, it's one of the most popular places in town.

Onis 7 Av Norte & 6 C Poniente Boho-looking two-storey bar which serves some snacks and has stunning views over the ruined church of San Agustín. Only gets busy at weekends.

Reds 1 C Pon 3 Large British-owned bar with good beer selection, pool tables, and a full menu that takes in local, Mexican, Thai and English comfort food. The perfect location for a big football game.

Reilly's 5 Av Norte 31 Antigua's Irish bar is always popular and offers comfort food (including roast beef some days), and hosts a great quiz (trivia) on Sun evenings.

Riki's Bar 4 Av Norte 4 Small, stylish place that's packed most nights due to its excellent location inside La Escudilla and extended happy hour (7–9pm). Musically things are often quite interesting with funk, jazz and lounge on the system.

La Sala 6 C Poniente 9 Enjoyable, fairly upmarket bar that has live music (Latin/funk/rock) on weekend nights and a good drinks list.
