Trinidad and Sancti Spíritus

Plaza Mayor

At the heart of the UNESCO-protected colonial section of Trinidad is the beautiful Plaza Mayor. The steeply sloping streets of Simón Bolívar and Francisco Javier Zerquera form its northeastern and southwestern borders, joined at the top and bottom by Fernando Echerrí and Rubén Martínez Villena respectively. This is the old town's focal point, comprising four simple fenced-in gardens, each with a palm tree or two and dotted with various statuettes and other ornamental touches, all of it surrounded by colourfully painted colonial mansions which are adorned with arches and balconies and now house museums and art galleries. Though principally crowded with camera-wielding tourists, there is nevertheless something quite captivating about this vibrant, compact and trim little plaza.
