comercia@casagran.gca.tur.cu A tourist attraction in itself on account of its beauty, the regal Casa Granda is a sensitively restored 1920s hotel overlooking Parque Céspedes. From the elegant, airy lobby to its two atmospheric bars, it has a stately, colonial air matched in its tasteful rooms. Price: $80-120CUC
3 Gran Hotel Enramada esq. San Félix 22/65-30-20 ana@ehtsc.co.cu A very central, friendly hotel operating in convertible pesos for visitors and pesos for Cubans. While it no longer merits the "grand" of its title, the vaguely colonial exterior and faded charm of the rooms are very appealing if you don't mind roughing it a bit – the somewhat grubby bathrooms don't look their best in the harsh fluorescent lights. Singles, doubles and triples all come with a/c and many with a tiny balcony overlooking the busy shopping street. Price: $30-40CUC
4 Islazul San Juan Carretera de Siboney, km 1 22/68-7200 hotel@sanjuan.scu.cyt.cu Villa San Juan has the most congenial location of all the Santiago hotels, set amid tropical trees and lush plants. The hotel itself is tasteful though a bit bland, with smart, attractive rooms and clean communal areas. An inviting pool area and friendly staff complete the pleasant atmosphere. Roughly 4km from the centre, this is well located for those driving. Price: $50-60CUC
5 Libertad Aguilera s/n e/ Serafin Sánchez y Pérez Carbo 22/62-7710 This cosy, mid-range hotel offers unexciting but decent rooms with cable TV spread along corridors lined with bold Spanish tiles. Those at the back are quieter. Price: $30-40CUC
6 Melía Santiago de Cuba Ave. de las Américas y Calle M 22/68-7070 reservas.1.msc@solmeliacuba.com Santiago's biggest, brashest hotel caters for business types and luxury-seekers. The blocky red, white and blue exterior is ultra-modern and fits well with the shiny green marble interior, while facilities include a beauty parlour, boutiques, a gym, conference rooms and the best pool in town ($10CUC for non-guests), as well as bars and restaurants galore. The rooms are tastefully decorated, some with original paintings by local artists, and fully equipped with all mod cons. Price: $80-120CUC
7 San Basilio San Basilio 403 e/ Calvario y Carnicería 22/65-1702, 68-7069 This gorgeous little hotel, with a blue-and-white exterior that makes it look like a frosted cake, offers excellent value for the money. Its eight tastefully furnished rooms, arranged around a bright, plant-filled patio, come with cable TV, fridge and a/c. Price: $40-50CUC
