Hotels

1 Hotel El Bosque Ave. Jorge Dimitrov Reparto Pedro Díaz Coello 24/48-1012 bosque@bosque.holguin.info.cu The best convertible-peso hotel in Holguín, located on the outskirts of town, 2km east of the centre. Although not very modern, the individual self-contained blocks, with two or three rooms apiece, are well maintained and set in leafy grounds. Some rooms have refrigerators and all are super-clean, with spotless bathrooms, and hibiscus flowers strewn on the bed. Two restaurants, a bar and a pool flesh out the attractive package. Price: $40-50CUC

2 Hotel Pernik Ave. Jorge Dimitrov 24/48-1667 www.hotelpernik.cu A bulky, imposing hotel located near the Plaza de la Revolución, a good half-hour's walk from the town centre, although taxis wait outside to ferry you in. It's a bit grim and overpriced, with half-hearted service and an erratic hot-water supply, but there are usually rooms available which are clean and good-sized, with satellite television. Price: $40-50CUC

3 Mirador de Mayabe Alturas de Mayabe 24/42-3485 This recently refurbished hotel, 8km south of town, is Holguín's most picturesque. The clean and comfortable rooms are grouped in graceful, red-tile-roofed, pale yellow chalets that are connected by flowerbeds tangled with verdant vines and creepers. There's a gorgeous lobby bar with panoramic views over the valley and swinging wooden love seats, two restaurants, and an invitingly large pool. Price: $40-50CUC
