Accommodation

1 Las Brisas 24/3-0218 reserva@brisas.gvc.cyt.cu www.brisasguardalavaca.com The plusher of the two hotels, Las Brisas boasts four restaurants, two snack bars, a beauty salon, massage parlour, kids' camp and watersports, as well as mercifully restrained variety-show-style entertainment. There's a choice between rooms and suites within the hotel block or more privacy in newer bungalow-style rooms, although all are equally luxurious (suites have hot tubs). Non-guests can wallow in luxury by buying a $25CUC day-pass which covers meals and use of facilities. Price: $120-180CUC

2 Club Amigo Atlántico Guardalavaca 24/3-01-80 booking@clubamigo.gvc.cyt.cu The Atlántico is a friendly and unpretentious resort that feels more Cuban than the others and attracts a varied clientele. It's a free-form complex (compiled from three previously independent hotels) with blocks of guestrooms, pools, bars and restaurants dotted around in a seemingly random layout and connected by meandering pathways. There's a variety of accommodation options catering for a range of needs and budgets but also varying in quality: the "Villa" section is easily the most appealing, with cool, airy houses painted in soothing pastels boasting balconies and simple but attractive furnishings; the "Tropical" and "Standard" areas offer plain but decent rooms – some with a sea view – strung along shadowy corridors, while the best-avoided "Bungalow" section seems stuck in a 1970s time warp. Price: $80-120CUC
