3 Meliá Cohiba Calle Paseo e/ 1ra y 3ra 7/33-3636 33-4555 This good-looking, modern hotel close to the Malecón caters predominantly for the business visitor, with uniformed bellhops, indoor fountains and a mini-mall. The tasteful but unimaginative rooms are full of mod cons. Price: $180CUC and above

Many of the original features from the hotel's inauguration in 1928 remain, and the small lobby is a delight with marble flooring, enormous teardrop chandeliers and nineteenth-century Japanese porcelain vases.
