Havana

Arrival

All international flights land at José Martí International Airport (switchboard 7/649-5777 & 266-4644), about 15km south of the city centre. The vast majority of international passengers are deposited at Terminal Three ( 7/649-0410) where most airport services are concentrated, including a few shops, a restaurant and a bureau de change, while there are car rental desks in each of the three terminals. Since there is no public transportation linking the rest of Havana directly with the airport, the chances are you'll be forced to pay for a taxi; the half-hour journey into Havana shouldn't cost more than $15–20CUC.

Arriving by bus, depending on which service you've used you'll be dropped off at either the Víazul terminal ( 7/881-1413 or 881-5652), on Avenida 26 across from the city zoo, or the Astro-operated Terminal de Omnibus (switchboard 7/870-9401; convertible-peso ticket office 870-3397; information 879-2456), at Avenida Independencia esq. 19 de Mayo, near the Plaza de la Revolución. Both stations are a $3CUC to $6CUC taxi ride from most of the central hotels, and there's a car rental desk at the Víazul terminal.

Trains pull in at the Estación Central de Ferrocarriles ( 7/860-9448 & 862-1920) in southern Habana Vieja, where picking up a taxi is slightly problematic and you'll probably have to find yourself a private cab or one of Havana's army of bicitaxis. There is a separate, smaller part of the station called Terminal La Coubre a couple of hundred metres down the road for trains to and from Cienfuegos.

In the less likely event that you arrive on one of the two or three cruise ships that dock in Havana every week, you will disembark at the splendid Terminal Sierra Maestra ( 7/866-6524 & 862-1925), facing the Plaza de San Francisco in Habana Vieja. Here there's a souvenir shop and car rental services.
