Getting around

By train

Cuba is the only country in the Caribbean with a functioning rail system and, though slow, trains are a good way of getting a feel for the landscape. You'll need your passport to buy a ticket, which you must do directly from the train station at least an hour before departure. The main line, which links Havana with Santiago, also serves Matanzas, Santa Clara, Ciego de Ávila, Camagüey and Las Tunas. Servicio Regular trains, which are perfectly comfortable but lack air conditioning, leave once daily, stopping at all the main-line stations. Fares work out at around $4 per 100km, with Havana to Santiago, for example, costing $30. Servicio Especial trains run every three days and are more expensive ($43 from Havana to Santiago), though they do have air conditioning and are significantly faster.
