The much larger, more picturesque of the city's two cemeteries, is the Cementerio Tomás Acea. Completed in 1926, the overly grand Parthenon-styled entrance building, at the end of a long driveway with gardens on either side, leads into the gentle slopes of the cemetery grounds. This is the nearest thing to a landscaped city park in Cienfuegos, its rolling, sweeping lawns punctuated by the odd tree and, from the highest point, pleasant views of the distant bay. There are some interesting tombs to look out for, the most striking being the monument to the Martyrs of September 5, 1957, local rebels who were killed in the uprising commemorated by the Museo Histórico Naval Nacional. Occasionally there is a guide on hand offering informal tours, with a tip the only payment expected.
