The lovely terraced back garden features a functioning well, and the talkative and likeable owners have installed their own generator so that the house never suffers from blackouts. Price: $20-30CUC

The two available bedrooms, both with a/c, have their own private bathrooms; the best room is in its own block upstairs and costs a justifiable $5CUC extra. There's a pleasant patio where meals are eaten, and an attractive garden. Price: $20-30CUC

Armando will gladly talk revolutionary politics for hours whilst Leonor excels at playing the host, fixing cocktails at the bar or cooking her house speciality, chicken in cola. (Vegetarian meals are also a speciality.) The two rooms for rent are light and airy and a roof terrace has great views. Price: $20-30CUC

Room facilities, including TV, CD player, fridge and well-appointed en-suite bathroom, are excellent, whilst communal spaces include a lovely, leafy central patio and a great little roof terrace with views of the bay. There are two decent double rooms on the upstairs veranda, each with its own fridge, that benefit from plenty of natural light and the fresh breezes blowing in across the bay, and there's a small, saltwater swimming pool too.
