Built in 1927, it has been artfully renovated, preserving its eclectic mix of styles with Baroque balconies, exquisite tiling, a cracked marble staircase and corridors bathed in greenish light. The comfortable rooms, furnished with reproduction 1920s furniture, are small and lack natural light, but this is more than compensated for by the building's class and character; the best rooms are arranged around a pretty patio housing a bar and a veranda where breakfast is served. 29-3933 Graciously faded eighteenth-century building that became a hotel in the 1930s, with well-maintained rooms, some with balconies overlooking the busy street below. A small pool, an elegant marble dining room with panoramic views, and a dark and sultry piano bar are pluses. Price: $40-50CUC
3 Plaza Van Horne no.1 e/ República y Avellaneda 32/28-2413. Basic accommodation at a reasonable rate, in a friendly hotel opposite the train station. The size of the rooms differs greatly, so check beforehand to ensure you get one of the larger ones with a balcony. Price: $30-40CUC
