Ciego de Ávila and Camagüey

Drinking, nightlife and entertainment

1 Bar Republica República no.293 e/ San Esteban y Finlay Opening time: Daily noon– midnightPleasant little local drinking bar where you can get an ice-cold local Tinima beer for a handful of Cuban pesos.

2 Bar Siboney San Rafael esq. Lugareño Much cleaner, lighter and friendlier than most – and less intimidating for lone women – this excellent rum bar sells a couple of local specialities.

3 El Cambio Parque Agramonte Opening time: 24hrA friendly rum bar opening onto the park, with an old-fashioned though silent jukebox. A great place to slowly sip an afternoon away.

4 Casa de la Trova Salvador Cisneros no.171 e/ Martí y Cristo Opening time: Mon– Sat noon–7pm, 9pm–1am, Sun 11am–6pm, 9pm–2amPrice: $3CUCThe town's Casa de la Trova is a good place to catch live music all day long. The fun really kicks off at the weekends, when excellent local bands play in the palm-tree-fringed courtyard and get audiences (a good mix of locals and visitors) on their feet and dancing.

5 Galería Colonial Ignacio Agramonte no.406 e/ República y López Recio. Opening time: 10pm–3amPrice: $7CUCAttracting tourists and nouveau riche Cubans who can afford the entrance fee, the Galería hosts slick cabaret shows on weekend nights that feature a mix of professional dancers, international singers and touring Cuban bands. Attractions earlier in the week range from stand-up comedians to fashion shows.

6 Gran Hotel Maceo no.67 e/ Ignacio Agramonte y General Gómez. Though all the big hotels have their own bars, the only one worth lingering in is this dark, atmospheric piano bar, which sometimes has live music.

7 Oasis Independencia esq. General M Gómez Opening time: Open 24 hours An attractive, open-sided street-corner bar where vaguely chilled local Tinima beer is served with a smile.
