Facing the church and convent, on the other side of, is the Casa Natal de Ignacio Agramonte, an attractive colonial house with dark wood balustrades and a fine, heavy wooden door, birthplace of the local hero of the first War of Independence. All Agramonte's possessions were confiscated when he took up arms against the colonial powers and, although never returned to him while he was alive, they now form part of the museum's collection. After his death the Spanish authorities converted his home into a market and then later, adding insult to injury, a bar. It opened as a museum in 1973. The standard of life enjoyed by wealthy sugar plantation owners like the Agramontes is well highlighted in their impressive furniture on display, including a well-crafted piano and oversized tinajones out in the central patio. Rather more mundane are the personal papers, pocket watch and other ephemera belonging to Agramonte himself. Free piano recitals are held in the central patio every Saturday night at 8.30pm.
