San José

Getting Around

Once you've gotten used to the deep gutters and broken pavements, San José is easily negotiated on foot. Several blocks in the city centre around the Plaza de la Cultura have been completely pedestrianized. There is little need to take buses within the city centre, though the suburban buses are useful, particularly if you are heading out to Parque la Sabana, a thirty-minute walk west along Paseo Colón. Escazú is a twenty-minute ride to the west, and the University of Costa Rica and San Pedro are a ten-minute ride to the east.

Buses stop running between 10–11pm and taxis become the best way to get around. These days street crime is noticeably on the rise, and most Josefinos advise against walking alone after dark, women especially.
