Limón Province and the Caribbean coast

Aviarios del Caribe

The small wildlife sanctuary Aviarios del Caribe (8am–5pm; $5) sits on a small island in the river's delta. The sanctuary functions as an important rehabilitation and research centre for injured and orphaned sloths, and, not surprisingly, is the best place in Costa Rica to see them up close. Several walking trails traverse the grounds and there's an observation platform for bird-watching (an incredible 312 species have been sighted here – bring binoculars). You may also spot whitefaced, howler and spider monkeys. On the three-hour kayak tour (departure at 6am; $30) through the delta you might catch a glimpse of caimans, river otters and all kinds of birds. The sanctuary's lodge ( 750-0775, 750-0725, www.ogphoto.com/aviarios ; Price: $101-150) has comfortable B&B accommodation in seven rooms with fans and hot-water bath – it's often full, so book ahead. To reach Aviarios del Caribe by bus from Limón, take the Cahuita service and ask to be dropped off at the entrance, just before the Puente Río Estrella.

The Colon Caribe Jungle and Beach Resort Hotel ( 256-5520, www.coloncaribe.com ; $87) features 32 bungalows and 11 standard rooms evoking representative Afro-Caribbean style, with floral prints and bamboo furnishings. There's a swimming pool and tennis/volleyball court. Each bungalow has air conditioning, cable TV, and cozy terraces to enjoy the surrounding flora and fauna. There's been some complaints about hot water consistency and the relative isolation, however. A good choice if you prefer being left alone.
