The northeast: Isaan

The town nearest both sets of ruins is Ban Tako, located on Highway 24, 14km east of Nang Rong (site of the closest accommodation), 115km southeast of Khorat or 83km southwest of Surin. Bus #274 travels between Khorat and Surin, leaving every thirty minutes around the clock and taking 2 hours 25 minutes from Khorat (via Nang Rong) or 1 hour 45 minutes from Surin.
From Ban Tako it's 12km south to Phanom Rung and another 8km southeast along a side road to Muang Tam; as there's no public transport direct to the ruins most people rent an expensive motorbike taxi here, which usually costs B300–400 per person for the round-trip to Phanom Rung, Muang Tam and back to Ban Tako.
