Phanom Rung and Muang Tam
Built during the same period as Phimai, and for the same purpose, the fine ruined Khmer temple complexes of Prasat Hin Khao Phanom Rung and Prasat Muang Tamform two more links in the chain that once connected the Khmer capital with the limits of its empire. Sited dramatically atop an extinct volcano, Phanom Rung has been beautifully restored and gives the most complete picture of Khmer architecture in Thailand; the more recently renovated Muang Tam lies on the plains below.
Most people do the ruins as a day-trip from Khorat or Surin, though it's also possible to stay closer to the sights, in Nang Rong. There's public transport from Khorat, Surin and Nang Rong as far as the little town of Ban Tako, from where you'll need to take a motorbike taxi for the final few kilometres to the ruins. Alternatively, rent your own motorbike from Nang Rong, or join one of the inexpensive day-tours from Phimai or Khorat.
