Thailand Guide
The northeast: Isaan
Getting Around
Many travellers approach Isaan from the north, either travelling directly from Chiang Mai, or going via Phitsanulok, in the central plains, but you can also take direct buses from the east-coast towns of Pattaya, Rayong and Chanthaburi.
All major northeastern centres have direct bus services from Bangkok. Two rail lines cut through Isaan, providing useful connections with Bangkok and Ayutthaya and there are also flights between Bangkok and several major northeastern cities.
Compared to many other regions of Thailand, northeastern roads are fairly traffic-free, so renting your own vehicle is also a good option.
