Food and Drink

1 Dream Café 88/1 Thanon Singhawat Dark and cosy, with walls and windowsills full of curios and Thai antiques, this rather cool, long-running Sukhothai institution serves great food (two courses for around B300) and is very popular. Highlights include tom yum with pork spare ribs and young tamarind, fresh Vietnamese-style spring rolls, and deep-fried banana-flower fritters. To complement, choose from twenty different ice-cream sundaes and a range of stamina-enhancing herbal drinks – plus gin-and-tonics.

2 Khun Tanode Beside the bridge on Thanon Charodvithitong Low-key, laid-back, well-priced little riverside restaurant that's popular with locals and is prettily illuminated at night. Try the local speciality – crispy-fried chicken drumsticks in Sukhothai sauce (B60) – or mussels cooked in a herb sauce (B60). Opening time: Daily 10am– midnight

3 Kru Iew Thanon Charodvithitong, cnr Soi Mahasaranon 1 Award-winning, folksy lunch spot that's locally famous for its aromatic parcels of phat thai wrapped in thin omelette (from B20), its fresh Vietnamese-style naim nueng herb and pork spring rolls (B70) – and its Sukhothai noodles. Watch the white-capped cooks in their open-plan kitchens. Opening time: Daily 10am–3pm
