Getting Around

Several local city bus routes crisscross the city, most running via the city-centre bus stands on Thanon Akkathasaroth, 150m south of the train station, where southbound buses pick up outside the Asia Hotel, and northbound ones from across the road.

For a cheap whizz around some of the town's main sights you could take the 30-minute tramway tour that departs from in front of the tourist information booth in the car park at Wat Mahathat (B30, kids B20; departs when full from 9am–3pm, approximately every 30min on busy days). Commentary is in Thai but there's an English-language summary available and the route takes in a trio of partially excavated ruins across the river – King Naresuan's shrine and place of birth, Chandra Palace, plus the Sukhothai-era Wat Wihanthong – none of which is as yet sufficiently restored to be worth making the effort to walk to.

At night a fleet of samlors twinkling with fairy lights takes tourists on an hour-long evening tour of Phitsanulok and its night bazaar; arrange the trip though any hotel (B250).
