Getting Around

Most of Kanchanaburi's accommodation is at the southern end of Thanon Maenam Kwai (also spelt Kwae), within easy reach of the train station, but the real town centre is some distance away, running north from the bus station up Kanchanaburi's main drag, Thanon Saeng Chuto.

A scenic way of travelling between riverine sights is by chartered longtail boat. Boats operated by Bangphupan Business ( T086 328 7838) cost B700 for a two-hour trip out to Khao Poon and Chungkai and back to the Bridge (maximum six people). Or you can paddle yourself in a kayak.

Most guest houses and many tour agencies rent out biccles for B20–30 per day (B50 for mountain bikes), and several also have motorbikes (B200–350/day) and jeeps (from B1000) for hire.

Many of the day-trip destinations beyond the town's perimeters are served by public transport, the train being an obvious option along the Kwai Noi Valley as far as its Nam Tok terminus. But train schedules are unreliable and bus connections can be time-consuming so many people either opt instead to join one of the many mix-and-match tours offered by Kanchanaburi agents or hire their own wheels for a day.
