Southern Thailand: the Gulf coast

Getting around

Pick-ups serve the port at Na Thon and all the beaches; destinations are marked in English and fares range from B40 to B60. In the evening, they tend to operate more like taxis and you'll have to negotiate a fare. The dozens of air-con taxis are by law required to use their meters (flag fall B50, on top of which they're allowed to add a B90 service charge), but it's famously hard to persuade any driver to do so.

You can rent a motorbike from around B150 in Na Thon and on the main beaches. Dozens are killed on Samui's roads each year, so proceed with great caution, and wear a helmet – apart from any other consideration, you can be landed with an on-the-spot B500 fine by police for not wearing one. In addition, thieves have been snatching bags from the front baskets of moving motorbikes on Samui, so keep yours on your person.
