Southern Thailand: the Andaman coast

Arrival

Krabi International airport (075 636541-2), 18km east of Krabi town, 35km from Ao Nang, is served by international Air Asia flights from Kuala Lumpur, and also by domestic flights from Bangkok with Thai Airways and Air Asia, and from Ko Samui with Bangkok Airways. An airport shuttle bus runs to Krabi town at B100 per person and Ao Nang for B150, or there are fixed-price taxis at B350 per car to Krabi town and port and B600–900 to Ao Nang (30min). Budget car rental has a desk in the airport arrivals area ( 075 636171, www.budget.co.th ), as does Avis ( 075 691941, www. avisthailand.com ), and local company Krabi Friendly (075 612558, www.krabicarhire.com ) can also arrange car hire from the airport.

Numerous long-distance buses run to Krabi's bus terminal, which is 5km north of the town centre. A frequent pick-up service shuttles into the town centre, or a motorbike taxi will cost you B50. Air-con and VIP buses from Bangkok depart from the capital's Southern Bus Terminal, mainly in the late afternoon or evening, and take about twelve hours to reach Krabi. A more comfortable alternative is to take the overnight train from Bangkok to Surat Thani and then change on to one of the frequent air-con buses or minivans to Krabi (hourly; 2hr). There are also frequent bus services from Phuket, Phang Nga, Takua Pa (for Khao Sok) and Trang.
