Matsudaya Hotel 3-6-7 Yuda Onsen 083/922-0125 925-6111 A historic three-hundred-year-old ryokan, cocooned by high walls, on the main road running through the onsen resort. Has a modern high-rise extension, but the elegant tatami rooms, delicious meals and a lovely traditional garden make it worth the expense. Price: ¥40000 and above

5 Taiyō-dō Komeya-chō 083/922-0897 922-1152 Surprisingly large ryokan, with a small central garden and tatami rooms with shared bathrooms. It's good value when you consider that rates include two meals. The entrance is on the east side of Komeya-chō arcade. Price: ¥10000-15000
6 Yamaguchi Kankō Hotel 2-4-20 Eki-dōri 083/922-0356 925-5668 Convenient budget hotel with plastic herons and a bamboo garden by the entrance. Inside, the atmosphere is no less cheesy, but the tatami rooms are clean. Price: ¥7000-10000
7 Yamaguchi Youth Hostel 801 Miyano-kami 083/928-0057 Set in a peaceful rural location a few kilometres east of the city in an ivy-clad building with tatami dorms, good food, English-speaking owners and a quirky art collection. The nearest train station is Miyano-eki, two stops east of Yamaguchi – if you call the owners they will come and collect you from there. Price: ¥2730
