Hino-yama

The one thing you should do while in Shimonoseki is head up Hino-yama to take in the panoramic view over the Kanmon Channel. A number of trails lead up to the 268-metre summit and there is a cable car (¥200) to the top, which is only open in July and August, with buses running the rest of the year (hourly 9.15am–6.15pm). The view from the top of the mountain takes in the whole of the Kanmon Straits and the islands to the west of Shimonoseki – particularly memorable towards sunset. Over a thousand ships a day sail through this narrow waterway, making it one of Asia's busiest maritime crossroads.
