3 Shimonoseki Hino-yama Youth Hostel 3-47 Mimosusogawa-chō & 0832/22-3753 Fine hostel with good views across to the Kanmon Bridge and free wireless Internet access. The dorms have bunk beds and the friendly English-speaking manager is a reasonable cook. From Shimonoseki Station, take the bus from platform 1 to the Hino-yama ropeway, from where the hostel is a two-minute walk downhill. More buses stop at the base of Hino-yama at Mimosuso-gawa; it takes ten minutes to hike up to the hostel from here. Check-in is from 4pm and there's a 9.30pm curfew. Price: ¥2900
4 Shumpanrō 4-2 Amida-dera 0832/23-7181 32-7980 Expensive, top-notch hotel, near the Akama-jingū, with large suites of Western-style bedrooms and tatami sitting rooms overlooking the Kanmon Channel. The meals include lavish fugu dishes. Price: ¥40000 and above
5 Via Inn Shimonoseki 4-2-33 Takezaki-chō 0832/22-6111 24-3261 One of the newest of the many business hotels close to the station. The rooms are plainly decorated, but the beds are wide and comfortable. Price: ¥7000–15000
