Western Honshū
Matsue Historical Museum
Situated in an elegant whitewashed wooden building, whose combination of pillars, verandahs and ornate gabled roof are typical of the hybrid style of the Meiji era. The two-storey mansion was built in 1903 to accommodate the emperor on the off chance that he might visit the city, which he never did. It now contains an interesting collection of colourful local arts and crafts, including plenty of tea-ceremony utensils. Address: Jōzan Kōen Opening time: Daily 8.30am–5pmPrice: Free
