3 Matsue Lakeside Youth Hostel 松江レイクサイドユースホステル 1546 Kososhi-chō & 0852/36-8620 Spacious hillside hostel, inconveniently located a few kilometres west of Matsue, but with fine bunk-bed dorms, friendly staff, good meals and a great view across Shinji-ko. Take the Ichibata line one stop from Matsue Shinji-ko Onsen Station to Tiffany Bijutsukan-mae Station, then follow the signs for around ten minutes to the hostel. If you arrive late at night, they will collect you from Matsue Station. Price: ¥2940
4 Minamikan 14 Suetsugu-Honmachi 0852/21-5131 26-0351 Matsue's top ryokan, made even more beautiful by renovations in 2007, is in a modern complex but has a distinctly traditional feel, from the courteous service to the neatly clipped pines in the gravel garden. Huge suites of tatami rooms and the best local cuisine push up the prices. Price: ¥30000-40000
5 Ryokan Terazuya 60-3 Tenjin-machi 0852/21-3480 21-3422 Set in a quiet location above a sushi restaurant, this excellent-value ryokan is run by a friendly English-speaking couple and has well-kept Japanese-style rooms with air conditioning and TV. For two meals, add ¥3000 per person. Price: ¥7000-10000

7 Tōyoko Inn 498-10 Asahi-machi 0852/60-1045 60-1046 www.tokoko-inn.com More modern than the Tōkyū Inn, but a little smaller and further down the road from Matsue Station, this budget accommodation is clean, reliable and offers in-room Internet data ports and complimentary Japanese breakfast. Price: ¥7000-10000
8 Young Inn 5 Uo-machi & 0852/25-4500 There's a 1970s retro feel to this business hotel and bar. The rooms are cheap because they're cramped and share shower rooms (no baths), but they're clean, and the hotel is conveniently sited just south of the main sights. Price: ¥3000-5000
