    1 ANA Hotel 7-20 Nakamachi, Naka-ku 082/241-1111 www.anahotels.com/eng/hotels/hij Reasonably priced luxury hotel with spacious rooms only a couple of minutes' walk east of the Peace Park. The comfy lobby overlooks an ornamental garden and there's a swimming pool as well as several restaurants and a few single rooms. Price: ¥20000-30000

    2 Aster Plaza International Youth House 4-17 Kakomachi, Naka-ku 082/247-8700 246-5808 Accommodation at this municipal culture centre a block south of the Peace Park is meant for students, but is also available at the same rates to foreign tourists. The large, comfortable Western and tatami rooms have en-suite bathrooms and good views. There's a midnight curfew. Price: ¥7000-10000

    3 Author Pick Chisun Hotel Hiroshima 14-7 Nobori-chō, Naka-ku 082/511-1333 New, bright and spotless accommodation at the Kanayama-chō streetcar stop on Aioi-dōri, which is refreshingly devoid of typical business hotel drabness. Price: ¥5000-7000

    4 Dormy Inn Hiroshima 3-28 Komachi, Naka-ku 082/240-1177 240-1755 Friendly hotel in a central location, with its own onsen and sauna, and free washing machines. Price: ¥10000-15000

    5 Hiroshima Kokusai Hotel 3-13 Tatemachi, Naka-ku 082/248-2323 www.kokusai.gr.jp/room/index-english.html Good-value mid-range hotel, in a great location just off the Hondōri shopping arcade. The hotel is showing a bit of wear, but there are a few economy singles, plus a 14th-floor revolving restaurant and a good Japanese restaurant, GeishūPrice: ¥10000-15000

    6 Hiroshima Youth Hostel 1-13-6 Ushita-shinmachi, Higashi-ku 082/221-5343 221-5377 This large institutional hostel, with bunk-bed dorms, is Hiroshima's cheapest option. There are extra charges, though, for bedsheets (¥140), heating in winter and a/c in summer (¥170), and for use of the outdoor swimming pool. The main drawbacks are its distance from the sights and the 10pm curfew. If you arrive by train, note that the information counter in Hiroshima Station can give details of where to catch the bus to the hostel; if you arrive at the Bus Centre, take any bus from platform 11 and get off at Ushita-shinmachi-itchō-me (¥210). From here, the hostel is an eight-minute uphill walk.Price: ¥2562

    7 Rihga Royal Hotel 6-78 Motomachi, Naka-ku 082/502-1121 www.rihga.com/hiroshi Hiroshima's grandest hotel soars 33 floors and was designed in the image of its neighbour, the reconstructed castle. Inside there are spacious rooms, six restaurants, a pool and fitness centre and a stunning painting of Itsukushima-jinja by Hirayama Ikuo in the plush lobby. Price: ¥20000-30000

    8 Hotel Sunroute 3-3-1 Ōtemachi, Naka-ku 082/249-3600 www.sunroute-hiroshima.com/panfe.htm One of the more upmarket branches of this nationwide chain of business hotels, with a couple of good restaurants (the Italian Viale and the Japanese Kissui), a non-smoking floor and rooms specially equipped for disabled guests. It's a five-minute walk east of the Peace Park, on Heiwa-ōdōri. Price: ¥15000-20000

    9 World Friendship Centre (WFC) 8-10 Higashi-Kannonmachi, Nishi-ku 082/503-3191 503-3179 This small and homey non-smoking B&B has tatami rooms and is run by a friendly American couple who can also arrange meetings with A-bomb survivors and guided tours around the Peace Memorial Park for non-guests. Breakfast is included. Price: ¥5000-7000
