Tokyo

Suidōbashi

Take the Sōbu line west, past Akihabara to Suidōbashi, where the stadium and thrill rides of Tokyo Dome City ( www.tokyo-dome.co.jp ) punctuate the skyline. The centrepiece is the plump, white-roofed Tokyo Dome, popularly known as the "Big Egg", Tokyo's major baseball venue and home ground of the Yomiuri Giants.

On the west side of the site is the Tokyo Dome City Attractions (daily 10am–10pm; www.laqua.jp ), a complex of three amusement parks rolled into one. Best of the seventeen rides are those in the most northerly LaQua section, where the higlight is "Thunder Dolphin" (¥1000), a high-speed rollercoaster guaranteed to get you screaming. If you haven't got the stomach for that, the "Big O", the world's first hubless and spokeless ferris wheel (¥800), provides a gentler ride and plenty of time to photograph the passing view. The hokey "13 Doors" (¥800), a Japanese house of horrors, also provides some ghoulish laughs. A one-day pass (¥4000, or ¥2800 after 5pm) gets you access to all the park's rides.
