Uwajima
Uwajima is famous for its pearls and also for its sumo-style bullfights, when the otherwise quiet and compact town comes alive. The main sights – which include a castle and a fertility shrine – can be seen easily in half a day, though an overnight stop will allow you more time to explore the town's tranquil backstreets lined with old wooden houses and temples, and hop up to Uwachō.
