6 Author Pick Root Down 1-26-1 Takasho-machi There's always a warm welcome at this café-bar that's popular with Tokushima's expat community and which is found beneath a soapland establishment in one of the city's raunchier areas. The American owner turns out a mean burger and all food and drinks are ¥500. Mon– Sat 7pm–3am.

8 Tori Tori 2-16 Ichiban-chō Serried ranks of sake bottle-keeps and fading Awa Odori posters set the tone at this convivial izakaya, next to the Lawsons convenience store.
