626-3346 Tucked away in the side streets between the station and the Shinmachi-gawa, this colourful place has spacious tatami rooms with attached bathrooms and friendly management. There's also a large communal bath. Rates including two meals are a great deal at ¥7000 per person, but it's fine to opt for accommodation only. Price: ¥10000-15000

Pleasant rooms are decorated in monochrome hues and each one has its own personal computer. There's also free access to the rooftop onsen bath, Jacuzzi and sauna (¥700 for non-guests). 10 Tokushima Youth Hostel 7-1 Hama, Ohama-machi 088/663-1505 www.jyh.gr.jp Next to a crescent-shaped stretch of beach fringed by pine trees, this hostel has a peaceful location and friendly English-speaking management. Meals are available, and bikes can be rented for ¥800 a day. Take the bus bound for Omiko (the last one leaves from outside Tokushima Station around 6pm), then catch the bus to Omiko-guchi and walk the remaining 3km to the beach. Price: ¥3000
