3 Izara Moon Kitahama Alley, 3-2 Kitahama-chō 087/811-4530. This stylish café-bar makes good use of the former warehouse space. It specializes in small plates of Chinese food including dim sum and offers good set lunches and Chinese tea during the day. A meal will be around ¥2000. 4 Kanaizumi 9-3 Konyamachi 087/822-0123 Busy main branch of a noted sanuki udon chain: go upstairs for a spot of luxury and service (¥1000 and up) or serve yourself downstairs if you're on a budget (¥500). Opening time: Daily 7am–5.30pm (downstairs), daily except Mon 11am–8.30pm (upstairs)

www.clubmikayla This Italian restaurant/café/bar has a prime position in a stand-alone site at the start of the breakwater jutting off the side of the Sunport development. 7 Prem Minami Building, 2-3 Tamachi 087/834-8505 Run by a friendly Indian family this colourfully decorated place serves good Indian curries, tandoori-cooked meats and naan, with little that will cost over ¥2000. Opening time: Mon– Fri 11am–2.30pm & 5–10pm, Sat & Sun 11am–10pm
8 Szechwan Restaurant Chin 29th floor Maritime Plaza, 2-1 Sunport 087/811-0477 The most appealing and certainly the most welcoming of Sunport's top-of-the-tower trio of restaurants. The cuisine is authentically spicy, the decor chic and the views spectacular. Price: Expect to pay around ¥3000 for dinner Opening time: Daily 11am–2.30pm & 5–9pm

Tenkatsu Nishizumi Hiroba, Hyogo-machi 087/821-5380 The interior of this reputable fish restaurant is dominated by a central sunken tank around which you can sit either at the jet-black counter bar or in tatami booths. Kimono-clad waitresses will bring you your pick of the fish served raw, as part of a sushi platter, or cooked in nabe stews. 11 Umie Kitahama Alley, 3-2 Kitahama-chō 087/811-7455 www.umie.info Relax over great coffee or tasty meals (around ¥1000) such as hearty beef stew at this hipsters joint decorated with mismatched furniture and stacks of old books and magazines. They sometimes host live music events and within the same complex are a gifts and stationery, gallery and second-hand furniture store. Opening time: Mon– Fri 9am–11.30pm, Sat & Sun 10am–11.30pm
