The JR train station is at the northern, seaside end of the central thoroughfare, Chūō-dōri, and ten minutes' walk from the heart of the city. Several direct trains arrive daily from Kōchi, Matsuyama, Okayama and Tokushima, and there's an overnight service to and from Tokyo. Long-distance and most local buses pull in nearby, at the north end of Chūō-dōri. Ferries from Kōbe (¥1800 one way, ¥2990 return; 
www.ferry.co.jp ) dock some way from the city centre at Tokushima-East; a free shuttle bus transports passengers to JR Takamatsu Station. Ferry connections with Shōdo-shima and Nao-shima are at the Sunport ferry terminal, five-minute walk east of the train station. Takamatsu airport ( 
087/835-8110, www.takamatsu-airport.com ) lies 16km south of the city, 35min away by bus (¥740) or taxi (¥4000).
