089/986-8880 An ageing apartment block has been transformed into this hostel, so each room is a self-contained unit with bathroom and small kitchen. The rooms lack natural light but it's very convenient for the castle and the management is friendly. They also have a pleasant café. Price: ¥2100

newgrandhotel.jp Not so new, nor that grand, but it does have single rooms and cheaper doubles in its older section (ask for the honkan) if you're on a budget. The newer doubles are a bit more comfortable and there's one cheap tatami room. Guests can also use the large communal baths and sauna. Price: ¥3000-15000

Yamatoya Honten Hotel 20-8 Dōgo Yunomachi

www.yamatoyahonten.com Hotels with their own Nō stage are few and far between, but not only does the Yamatoya Honten have one, it also stages two short nightly performances, the longest of which lasts thirty minutes; the other is ten minutes long and is fine if you'd just like a taste of the art form. The tatami rooms are well up to deluxe standard. There are also more modest Western-style single rooms and a rotemburo in the basement. Rates include two meals but it's possible to stay here just on a room only basis, too. Price: ¥30000 and above including two meals.
