Check Inn Matsuyama 2-7-3 Sanbanchō 089/998-7000 www.checkin.co.jp A touch of class is available at this central good-value business hotel with emerald-green leather sofas, a Rococo-style grandfather clock and chandeliers in the lobby and more chandeliers in the rooms. Rooftop onsen baths are also a plus. Price: ¥10000-15000
5 International Hotel Matsuyama 1-13 Ichiban-chō 089/932-5111 www.kokusai-h.jp Good-value mid-range hotel near the castle, with comfortably furnished rooms and some striking interior design in its public areas and restaurants. The retro-to-the-max top-floor Chinese restaurant has to be seen to be believed. Price: ¥10000-15000

7 Matsuyama Downtown Youth Hostel 3-8-3 Ōkaidō 089/986-8880 An ageing apartment block has been transformed into this hostel, so each room is a self-contained unit with bathroom and small kitchen. The rooms lack natural light but it's very convenient for the castle and the management is friendly. They also have a pleasant café. Price: ¥2100
8 Matsuyama New Grand Hotel 3-4-10 Niban-chō 089/933-3661 newgrandhotel.jp Not so new, nor that grand, but it does have single rooms and cheaper doubles in its older section (ask for the honkan) if you're on a budget. The newer doubles are a bit more comfortable and there's one cheap tatami room. Guests can also use the large communal baths and sauna. Price: ¥3000-15000
9 Matsuyama Tōkyū Inn 3-3-1 Ichiban-chō 089/941-0109 www.tokyuhotels.co.jp Opposite the Ōkaidō arcade, this relatively upmarket branch of the national hotel chain has stylishly furnished rooms in cool green tones with large beds. Some rooms have views of the castle hill, and there's also a decent range of restaurants and a breakfast buffet for ¥1000. Price: ¥15000-20000
10 Dōgo Yamanote Hotel 1-13 Dōgo 089/998-2111 www.dogo-yamanote.com The spacious rooms at this faux English-style hotel offer Laura Ashley-esque decor with floral print wallpaper and parquet floors. Some have great views towards the city and castle. Rates include breakfast. Price: ¥15000-20000
11 Funaya 1-33 Dōgo Yumo-machi 089/947-0278 One of the oldest and most expensive ryokan in Dōgo, this isn't much to look at from the outside, but inside it has immaculate tatami rooms, its own baths and a beautiful central garden. Rates include two meals. Price: ¥40000 and above
12 Matsuyama Youth Hostel 22-3 Dōgo Himezuka 089/933-6366 www.matsuyama-yh.com Fantastic hostel, where the management goes out of its way to make your stay enjoyable: there's a good-value restaurant, a sauna, free Internet access and free tea and snacks are served every evening in the comfy lounge. 14 Patio Dōgo Dōgo Honkan-mae 089/941-4128 www.patio-dogo.co.jp You couldn't get more convenient than this modern mid-range hotel, opposite the Honkan, with friendly staff. The attached sushi restaurant is good value, and there's free Internet access. Price: ¥10000-15000
15 Yamatoya Honten Hotel 20-8 Dōgo Yunomachi 089/935-8880 www.yamatoyahonten.com Hotels with their own Nō stage are few and far between, but not only does the Yamatoya Honten have one, it also stages two short nightly performances, the longest of which lasts thirty minutes; the other is ten minutes long and is fine if you'd just like a taste of the art form. The tatami rooms are well up to deluxe standard. There are also more modest Western-style single rooms and a rotemburo in the basement. Rates include two meals but it's possible to stay here just on a room only basis, too. Price: ¥30000 and above including two meals.
