3 Harumi Youth Hostel 2-22-10 Tomari 098/867-3218 The older, smaller and slightly cheaper of Naha's two youth hostels, on the northwest edge of town near the Tomari ferry port, though still a good hike from the centre. It's on bus route #24 or #124 from the airport, #101 from Naha Shin-kō; get off at the Tomari Takahashi stop. Price: ¥3150

www.loisir-naha.com One of the more luxurious hotels in Naha, located right on the waterfront. The butterfly-shaped swimming pool was designed by Hanae Mori. There's also a spa plus five restaurants and two bars to suit all tastes. Price: ¥20000-30000
5 Naha Central Hotel 2-16-36 Makishi 098/ 862-6070 www.nahacen.jp This good-value hotel lies just off Kokusai-dōri behind Mitsukoshi department store. Rooms are on the small side, but nicely decorated and a notch above the competition. Breakfast included. Price: ¥15000-20000
6 Naha Dai-ichi Hotel 2-2-7 Kume 098/868-0111 868-0555 One of the cheaper options in central Naha, this no-frills business hotel with boxy, en-suite rooms gets booked up quickly. Rates include a self-service breakfast and there's also a coin laundry. Price: ¥7000–15000

8 Okinawa Guest House 2-6-13 Nishi 090-9782-9696 Tucked away in a grimy block behind the Sango Sentā (Coral Centre), this is Naha's cheapest accommodation and as close to a backpacker flophouse as you're likely to find in Japan, although the rooms are much cleaner than those of its Southeast Asian equivalents.Price: ¥1500

10 Okinawa International Youth Hostel 51 Ōnoyama 098/857-0073 859-3567 A swish hostel offering bunk-bed dorms, each with TV, sofa and wash basin, as well as very comfy three-bed family rooms (¥10,000). They also have a coin laundry and can arrange diving and kayak trips. It's about ten minute walk from Naha Bus Terminal, on the south side of the Kokuba-gawa, or on all bus routes from the airport. From the Kōen-mae stop, walk north and turn right beside KFC. Price: ¥3360
11 Shinkin'ichi Ryokan 098/869-1010 In the same building as the Hakusei-sō, this is an equally appealing place, with friendly, English-speaking staff and spotless rooms. Price: ¥5000-7000
12 Sun Palace 2-5-1 Kumoji 098/863-4181 861-1313 The small balconies overflowing with greenery add a nice flourish to this pleasant hotel, beside a canal to the north of Palette Kumoji. Rooms are light and airy, though it's worth upgrading to the more spacious double or standard twins. They also have Internet access. Price: ¥10000–20000
13 Tōyoko Inn Naha Izumisaki Kōsaten 2-1-20 Kume 098/951-1045 www.toyoko-inn.com New branch of the great budget hotel chain – most of the rooms are good-value singles (from ¥6500). It's a short walk from the south end of Kokusai-dōri, and they have laundry facilities and free Internet. Price: ¥7000-10000
14 Yamaichi 2-16-13 Makishi 098/866-5421 867-3713 Though rather aged, the rooms in this small, family-run hotel aren't bad for the location, north of Kokusai-dōri behind the Mitsukoshi store. There's a choice of Western or tatami rooms, some with bathroom. Price: ¥7000-10000
