Aomori Museum of Art

The stark white rectangular building seems an extension of the snowy landscape that surrounds it for much of the year, and is itself a marvel to admire. Inside are a selection of works commissioned by Hirosaki-born artist Yoshimoto Nara, famous for his sculptures of big white dogs, a few pieces by Munakata Shikō, a chilling photography exhibit from the Vietnam War and three enormous murals by Marc Chagall. Take a bus from platform 2 at Aomori Station, bound for Sannai Maruyama Iseki-mae stop (30min; ¥330) from which a shuttle bus whisks passengers over to the museum doors. Buses back to Aomori station depart from the museum's parking lot and take only 10min. Opening time: Daily 9.30am–5pm; closed every second and fourth MondayPrice: ¥500; temporary exhibits cost extra
