0188/33-1111 Situated on Hiro-koji beside the southeast corner of Senshū-kōen. Rooms are small but spruce, though the cheaper options only have a washroom. There are another two similarly priced Hotel Hawaiis in the area – the staff here can direct you. Price: ¥5000–10000
3 Kohama Ryokan 6-19-6 Naka-dōri 0188/32-5739 www.itcj.or.jp Located just five minutes' walk south of the station, this place has a great local atmosphere. Decorated with a kitsch collection of framed 1970s posters and knick-knacks, you can expect a friendly welcome from the owner and her talkative pet parrot. None of the Japanese-style rooms are en suite, but everything's squeaky clean and the food's excellent. Price: ¥10000-15000
4 Hotel Metropolitan 7-2-1 Naka-dōri 0188/31-2222 www.jrhotelgroup.com Immediately outside the station, this classy hotel is part of the JR East collection, which means JR pass holders can enjoy discounts. Rooms are tastefully decorated and contain all the usual business hotel amenities. Price: ¥15000-20000

6 Youth-Pal Akita YH 3-1 Kamiyashiki 0188/80-2303 www.jyh.or.jp A good bargain, with spacious rooms (many are singles with en-suite facilities) and decent meals. Take a bus to the Akita Seishonen Center (platform 6; every 30min; ¥160) – from here, walk west for five minutes and it is on the right. ¥2520 per person.
