www.jyh.or.jp Homely, well-worn youth hostel, run by a genial English-speaking owner, with two floors of shared tatami rooms. It's near Shiokawa Station, the third stop on the JR Ban'etsu line towards Kitakata (10min from Aizu-Wakamatsu Station). From the station, walk up to the first set of lights, turn left and keep walking for about ten minutes. The hostel is on the left straight after the bridge. Okonomi-yaki dinners are served (¥1000). 2 Aizuno Youth Hostel 88 Kakiyashiki, Terasaki Aizu-Takada-chō 0242/55-1020 www.jyh.or.jp Small, spick-and-span hostel set among rice fields, offering bunk beds in shared rooms, good food and bike rental. It's a twenty-minute walk northwest of Aizu-Takada Station, on the JR Tadami line (20min from Aizu-Wakamatsu Station; services are infrequent); walk straight ahead from the station, take the second right and keep going.Price: ¥3100–3360

32-6822 Smartish business hotel near Aizu Wakamatsu station (behind the Fuji Grand), offering reasonably sized rooms with TV, phone and mini-bathroom. Price: ¥10000-15000

info@fujigrandhotel.co.jp Right outside Aizu Wakamatsu station, this is a big, busy business hotel. The older rooms are a bit worn, but they are a touch cheaper than the Alpha One. Price: ¥7000-10000
5 Green Hotel Aizu 3-7-23 Chūō 0242/24-5181 24-5182 This small, spruce hotel has a choice of Western or (better-value) tatami rooms. It's in the backstreets, just south of the Washington Hotel. Price: ¥7000–15000
