Nagasaki Museum of History and Culture
The engaging Nagasaki Museum of History and Culture, or Nagasaki Rekishi Bunka Hakubutsukan focuses on the city's role as a conduit for cultural exchange; make sure you pick up an audio guide (free) at the ticket desk. Alongside scale models and videos, there are plenty of original materials, including an exquisite seventeenth-century folding screen depicting British and Dutch ships in Nagasaki harbour, and the first Japanese– English dictionary compiled by Dutch interpreters in 1814. There's a room devoted to local crafts, some showing distinctly foreign influences, and you exit through a reconstruction of the Nagasaki Magistrate's office. Opening time: Daily 8.30am–7pm; closed 3rd Tues of monthPrice: ¥600
