3 Nagasaki Ebisu Youth Hostel 6-10 Ebisu-machi 095/824-3823 www5a.biglobe.ne.jp/~urakami Friendly and relaxed hostel, with laundry facilities and evening meals. It only sleeps 10 people (¥2500 per person), so book in advance, and note there's an 11pm curfew. Turn second right after the post office, at the traffic lights, then bear right at the end of the park to find it tucked down an alley. Price: Up to ¥3000

The rooms – mostly single (from ¥3675) plus a couple of twins – are aged and very functional, but come with a tiny en-suite bathroom. Again, there's an 11pm curfew. Price: ¥3000-5000
5 Hotel New Nagasaki 14-5 Daikoku-machi 095/826-8000 www.newnaga.com Nagasaki's top hotel, conveniently placed just outside the station, has all the trimmings: grand marble lobby, shopping arcade, restaurants, bar and fitness centre with swimming pool (¥2100). The rooms are mostly Western-style, some boasting harbour views – not a lot of character, but generously sized. Price: ¥20000-30000

828-0178 For mid-range accommodation in central Nagasaki, you can't beat this elegant, well-priced hotel. The lobby sets the tone with its European-style dark-wood furniture and deep sofas. The standard rooms are more than adequate in greys or salmon tones with a choice of three different bed sizes. The restaurant serves an organic food buffet and there's a café-bar. Price: ¥10000-15000
8 Nishiki-sō 1-2-7 Nishikoshima 095/826-6371 828-0782 If you're after a bit of Japanese flavour, try this welcoming budget guesthouse on the far east side of town, up a short flight of steps. There's a choice of well-kept tatami rooms with or without views, en-suite facilities and so forth. Price: ¥5000-7000
9 Washington Hotel 9-1 Shinchi-machi 095/828-1211 www.nagasaki-wh.com Located in Chinatown, this is a standard member of the Washington chain, but with a good selection of rooms. Faclities include a restaurant and coffee lounge. Price: ¥10000-15000
10 Minshuku Tanpopo 21-7 Hoei-chō 095/861-6230 www.tanpopo-group.biz/tanpopo This small, tidy minshuku is about ten minutes' walk from the Matsuyama tram stop and the Peace Park. Overnight rates aren't bad for its tatami rooms, all without bath, and well-priced meals are also on offer. If you phone in advance, a pick-up service from JR Urakami Station is sometimes available. Price: ¥15000-20000
11 Park Side Hotel 14-1 Heiwa-machi 095/845-3191 846-5550 This reasonably smart and spacious hotel benefits from a peaceful parkside location. Some rooms are showing their age, but all are big and airy, with cool, cream walls. It has two restaurants, but no non-smoking rooms or Internet access. Price: ¥15000–30000
