Kyūshū

Science Centre

Immediately behind Miyazaki Station, a forty-metre-high satellite launcher pinpoints the city's excellent Science Centre, or Kagaku Gijutsukan The museum covers everything from microorganisms, wind power and pulleys to robots and satellite imagery, making use where possible of examples from the island. Most of the displays are interactive and great fun – ask for a copy of their very thorough English-language brochure. The museum also boasts one of the world's largest planetariums – 27m in diameter – which is well worth the extra expense. The shows (Tues– Sat 3 daily, Sun 4 daily) give you a superb fifty-minute ride through the heavens. Opening time: Tues– Sun 9am–4.30pmPrice: ¥520, or ¥730 including planetarium
